Miramar High Football Player Dies at Practice

Senior collapsed at conditioning session at school: official

A Miramar High school football player has died after collapsing at a conditioning session Tuesday evening, school officials said.

Isaiah Laurencin, a 16-year-old senior offensive lineman, was pronounced dead at Joe DiMaggio Hospital in Hollywood Wednesday morning, Broward schools spokeswoman Nadine Drew said.

Teammate Tarik McMorris said he saw Laurencin doing drills and then suddenly saw an ambulance rushing to the field.

"He was a great person on and off the field. He was not selfish. he wanted everybody to benefit," McMorris said. "I couldn't believe when I heard he passed away."

Drew said Laurencin had attended the session at the school at 3601 Southwest 89th Avenue but sat out some drills after he indicated he wasn't feeling well.

The 6'3 inch, nearly 300-pound athlete was sidelined for most of the session and wasn't working out when he collapsed around 5 p.m., Drew said.

Erica Holmes, Laurencin's aunt, said the teen had called his mom to come get hm from the conditioning drills because he was having cramps. She said the boy was healthy and didn't have any pre-existing conditions.

When the family arrived at the hospital, doctors were frantically trying to keep the boy alive, but couldn't, Holmes said.

She said football was Laurencin's first love, even when he couldn't play.

"Even though when he was hurt, he sat on the sidelines just to watch," Holmes said. "He let them know that's where he wanted to be."

The cause of Laurencin's death is unknown.
