Sweetwater Police Still Searching for Missing K-9 Dog

Gunner, a 7-month-old bloodhound, has been missing since late Friday afternoon

Police are still searching for a search-and-rescue dog that was taken from the backyard of its K-9 keeper in Homestead on Friday, a Miami security specialist involved in the case said Saturday.

Gunner, a seven-month-old bloodhound who was donated to the Sweetwater Police Department by the Jimmy Ryce Foundation, was last seen in Officer Jenna Mendez’s backyard late Friday afternoon, Octavio Oliu said.

An all-out search for Gunner was underway in Homestead between Krome Avenue and NW 6th Avenue, in an area covering some 10 street blocks, said Oliu, who is handling the case with Sweetwater Police.

The Jimmy Ryce Foundation donated Gunner to Sweetwater Police earlier this year to help keep kids safe. He began his training when he was 10 weeks old, and is due to finish training in 2012.

Gunner’s powerful sense of scent allows him to track criminals, and missing adults and children, Mendez said at the time.

But now the dog himself is missing.
