Prosecutors will seek the death penalty against a woman accused of killing her ex-partner's 2-year-old daughter in an act of revenge she purportedly justified with a Bible passage, according to court documents filed earlier this week.
A court filing by the State Attorney's Office indicated prosecutors' intentions regarding Kimberly Lucas, 40, of Jupiter, who is jailed awaiting trial for first-degree murder in the May killing of Elliana Lucas-Jamason and attempted first-degree murder of the girl's 10-year-old brother, who police say was drugged. Lucas was considered a second mother to both children.
Police said she left a bizarre note to the children's biological mother, with whom she had a relationship of more than 20 years that ended last year. In it, she suggested revenge and cited a pastor's sermon about the Old Testament story of Abraham, who was ordered by God to kill his son Isaac, only to be told at the last minute to stop.
"God never told me to stop!" Lucas wrote, according to an investigative report filed in court.
Lucas' attorney, Marc Shiner, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
