Recovery Efforts Underway in Puerto Rico After Hurricane Maria

Recovery efforts are now underway in Puerto Rico, after Hurricane Maria made landfall and destroyed many parts of the island.

As residents on the island are left without power and additional resources, government officials are doing everything they can do get the island back on track.

In the United States, people are working hard to get in touch with loved ones, but that is proving to be a difficult task, as communications are not working on the island, especially in smaller communities and towns.

Government spokesman Carlos Bermudez said that officials had no communication with 40 of the 78 municipalities on the island more than two days after the Category 4 storm crossed the island, toppling power lines and cell phone towers and sending floodwaters cascading through city streets.

On Friday, Puerto Rican authorities were scrambling to evacuate as many as 70,000 people who are downstream of a failing dam. More than 15 inches of rain fell on the mountains surrounding the Guajataca Dam in northwest Puerto Rico after Maria left the island Wednesday afternoon, swelling the reservoir behind the nearly 90-year-old dam. Officials say they don’t know how much time residents have to evacuate.
