Store Owner Shoots Employee, Kills Self Inside Coral Springs Mall Saturday

One person was killed and another shot after an incident at a Coral Springs mall Saturday morning.

The incident took place at Coral Square Mall, located at 9469 West Atlantic Boulevard, shortly after 10 a.m. The mall remained on lockdown for about an hour.

Police confirmed that 59-year-old Gus Kiriazis, the owner of the Fast Fix jewelry store inside the mall, shot one of his employees, 52-year-old Sabas Ferrer, before turning the gun on himself.

Kiriazis died at the scene, while Ferrer was transported to the Broward Health North where he is currently in stable condition.

Some witnesses say it sounded like an explosion inside the mall.

"At first, we received...I don't know how many calls...saying there was an active shooter. That was originally the thought," said Coral Spring Police Detective Ernesto Bruna. "It was not an active shooter. It was controlled in one of the stores and our officers responded extremely fast."
