Teen Being Held Without Bond in Shooting Death of Friend: BSO

A 14-year-old boy was being held without bond Friday, a day after authorities said he shot and killed his friend in Cooper City.

The incident happened Thursday afternoon at a home on Northwest 41st Street.

When deputies arrived, they found 14-year-old Charlie Martin dead from a gunshot wound to the head inside the home's garage.

According to the police report, Martin's friend, also 14, and Martin's 16-year-old brother were present when the shooting happened.

When interviewed by police, the 14-year-old told police the trio were at his house without any adult supervision. He said they were in the garage when they found his stepfather's handgun in a box.

According to the report, the 14-year-old stated he took the gun out and said it had a magazine in the well of it. A second magazine was in the box, which was loaded with ammunition.

The teen told police he took the first magazine out of the gun and observed the magazine was unloaded. He said he pulled the slide back on the gun and observed the gun did not have a round in the chamber.

According to the report, the teen told police the group started playing with the gun. He said they each pulled the trigger several times, and nothing happened.

But on one occasion, the teen said when he pulled the trigger, the gun went off, shooting Martin in the head.

He said after Martin was shot, he panicked and ran from the house and did not call police or render any aid. He said he dropped the gun after the shooting as he fled the garage.

The 911 call from the shooting was released on Friday. It came from a man at a nearby sushi restaurant who said he heard a possible gunshot and somebody screaming from a garage, "I heard either a firecracker or a gunshot."

The man also told dispatch he saw two males running around hysterical.

According to the report, the teen said his stepfather had showed him the gun before and even warned him about touching it.

After recovering the gun used in the incident, it was determined by investigators the gun in the magazine was loaded with 14 rounds and the gun had one live round in the chamber.

The teen, whose name is not being released by NBC 6 unless he's charged as an adult, was arrested on one count of manslaughter with a firearm.

He appeared in court Friday afternoon, where a judge ordered him to be held until next week to give prosecutors time to decide how to proceed with the case.

The boy's attorney said he did not intend to cause harm.
