Thanksgiving Travel May Require Extra Patience

Another early winter snow storm is expected to wreak havoc on millions of travelers hitting the road and taking to the skies over the Thanksgiving holiday.

AAA estimated that 46.3 million Americans will travel for this Thanksgiving holiday, the most in seven years. Ahead of those in the northeast is everything from a slush of snow and rain to heavy winds to more than a foot of snow in some areas.

Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C. are expecting rain, snow, and 30 miles per hour winds while folks in western Massachusetts are preparing for up to 16 inches of snow. Winter storm warnings have been issued from the Canadian border to western North Carolinas.

Of the 46 million travelers, AAA predicted that 89 percent of travelers (41.3 million) will drive. Still, air travel will be at the highest level since 2007 with more than 3.5 million Americans taking to the skies to get home.

And while South Florida may see clear skies and temperatures in the 70’s, it doesn’t mean any large-scale travel problems in the northeast won’t impact travelers here, specifically air travelers. As of Tuesday afternoon, 120 flights across the country have been canceled and nearly 3,300 have been delayed.

The largest delays on Tuesday were seen in Dallas, Chicago (O’Hare), Denver, Newark, and Washington/Dulles International.
