Tribute Planned for Miramar Football Player

Friends and teammates to gather at school where teen collapsed

Friends and teammates are planning to pay tribute Friday night to a Miramar High School football player who collapsed at a conditioning session earlier this week.

Isaiah Laurencin will be remembered at the gathering at the school at 3601 Southwest 89th Avenue beginning at 7 p.m.

Laurencin, a 16-year-old senior offensive lineman, collapsed Tuesday evening and was pronounced dead the following morning at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood, officials said.

He was going to celebrate his 17th birthday on Aug. 10.

Broward Schools spokeswoman Nadine Drew said Laurencin had attended the session but sat out some drills after he indicated he wasn't feeling well.

The 6-foot-3, nearly 300-pound athlete was sidelined for most of the session and wasn't working out when he collapsed around 5 p.m., Drew said.

The cause of Laurencin's death is still unknown, and an autopsy could take months, according to the Broward Medical Examiner.

Laurencin had passed a state-mandated physical exam before he had been allowed to participate in the school's football program, according to the Sun-Sentinel.
