University of Florida Debating Future of Speech on Campus by White Nationalist Leader

After the weekend’s deadly confrontations in Charlottesville, Virginia surrounding protests by white nationalists, eyes are on the University of Florida and whether a controversial speaker associated with the movement will be allowed to take the stage.

An outside group not affiliated with the university, the National Policy Institute, has asked to host the speaking event on campus that would feature Richard Spencer, a leader in the movement, next month.

A statement by the university's president, W. Kent Fuchs, says the speaker’s presence would be deeply disturbing and that the university is again not affiliated with the event.

Fuchs said the future of the event is being discussed and security plans are being reviewed.
