Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross went back to the drawing board Tuesday and won’t fire anyone currently on staff, but he is bringing in former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum in as the new executive vice president of football operations.

The story was first reported by Fox Sports’ Mike Garafolo and Alex Marvez.

Tannenbaum’s history with the Jets as general manager was a mixed bag. He helped build a solid offensive line through the draft with D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold, and also drafted the league’s top cornerback Darrelle Revis.

However, he missed badly on Vernon Gholston, Mark Sanchez, and others. He also brought in Tim Tebow as a backup quarterback for a disastrous stint with the team. Sanchez may have been his biggest bomb after he was given a hefty contract extension despite subpar play.

Where things could get interesting for the Dolphins is the future of head coach Joe Philbin. According to ProFootballTalk.com, Philbin will continue to report directly to owner Stephen Ross, while general manager Dennis Hickey will report directly to Tannenbaum.

Philbin is in the final year of his contract, and Ross has said he will let the head coach finish his current contract before making a decision on his future. That leaves Philbin’s future with the team in doubt, especially with new leadership taking over.
