Samsung To Launch Unbreakable, Bendable Phone Screen

Release scheduled for first half of 2013

Samsung is throwing a new twist into its mobile device lineup.

The South Korean tech company plans to start marketing touch screens with plastic (instead of glass) displays, which will make its phones unbreakable, lighter and bendable, the Wall Street Journal reported.

In an effort to stay relevant in a competitive market, Samsung is expected to release the flexible displays in the first half of 2013, a source told the Journal. The new screen will incorporate organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), which can be embedded in a thin plastic. The flexi-screen will be immune to cracks, one of the most common complaints among touch-screen users.

This technology has been in the development phase for years, and other tech giants like Sony and LG have launched prototypes, but the Journal said no other company has plans to commercialize it anytime soon.
