Once the weather cools down a bit, South Floridians feel the need to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. Autumn in Miami is the time for planting veggies and for busy art walks. Wynwood and the Design District will be particularly packed this November evening with antsy art lovers, hungry for some cool air.
One Wynwood Gallery, Artformz Alternative, is presenting both a presentation and exhibition on a timely subject matter: money. In these hard times, it’s not only you who bounces checks, even the government is legitimately broke.
“Money Makes Art” is a group exhibition addressing this pressing global and personal concern. Each artist is taking their own approach to currency - that thing we all really need to get what we want and what we need.
In particular, the conversation revolves around the state of the art market and how it affects what artist are making. Are pyrotechnics are out and recycled materials in? The term starving artist is sure to make a comeback in a time when even teachers are getting laid off. What are those artists going to buy to work with when there’s no cash?
Elisa Turner is a local journalist and art critic. She will be speaking at the event and conducing live interviews with participating artists discussing their inspiration for this project. Artists include Anja Marais, Alette Simmons-Jimenez, Donna Haynes, Gisela Savdie and Natasha Duwin. Check it out tonight at 7 p.m. at 171 NW 23 Street.
