"These two children have brought laurels to the country, and we have been told that they live in slums, which cannot even be classified as housing," said Gautam Chatterjee, head of the state-run Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority.

In addition to new homes, "Slumdog" director Danny Boyle said the children were paid more than the local wage during filming and a fund has been set up for the children to pay for their education, medical emergency expenses and "basic living costs."
