Chasing the Dragon

The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival rows into Miami this weekend

Don’t worry, you didn’t have too much sake, you really did see a dragon.

The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival is making a splash on Biscayne Bay this Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., so grab an ore and get rowing. Or just sit back, have another glass of sake and enjoy the festivities.

Forget the super yachts that usually fill the Bay, this weekend is all about dragon boats. Measuring 40 feet long and four feet wide and housing 40 paddlers and a drum to help rowers keep the beat, these magnificent floating devices, often adorned with dragonheads, are slick and speedy.

This year teams will be racing down the Bay for prizes, trophies and causes like breast cancer awareness. Team SOS (Save Our Sisters) is comprised of breast cancer survivors and supporters and donates 100 percent of pledges to The Joan G. Gaines Breast Cancer Research Fun at UM/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. And these pink-oared ladies might just kick your butt, too.

Forget gently down the stream, this is some serious racing. Be at the Bay’s Marine Stadium so you can watch them row, row, row their boats.
