NBCUniversal Presents ‘Project Innovation' Grants to Organizations Using Technology

NBC 6 is encouraging non-profit organizations across South Florida to apply for our Project Innovation grant!

The NBCUniversal Foundation is partnering with stations to launch the program recognizing organizations leveraging technology to solve everyday problems.

NBC 6 will be awarding $225,000 to programs addressing the South Florida community in an innovative way – in categories including Igniting Civic Engagement, Skills For the Digital Economy and STEM/STREAM Youth Programs.

Miami Children’s Museum artrageous! Exhibit is a past recipient with a $25,000 grant for an initiative called Museum in a Box. It’s a community program with pop up exhibits that takes the museum’s immersive arts-based education to Miami-Dade County elementary schools for three to four months at a time at no cost.

“In a short year, we’ve been able to expose over 1,300 kids to this amazing educational exhibit, which maybe these kids wouldn’t of had the opportunity,” said Alexandra Akshar from Miami Children’s Museum. “Maybe they can’t make it to the museum itself and we’ve been able to bring the museum to them. I think that we wouldn’t have been able to do that without Project Innovation.”

Immersing students in Museum in a Box allows classes to exercise their creativity, as they produce their own original works of art using different materials. Now, the Miami Children’s Museum wants to encourage other non-profit organizations to apply for NBC 6’s Project Innovation grant.

As soon as they walk in, they’re like ‘Ms. Leal, what is that’ and they just gravitate towards that and start feeling that,” said Krystal Leal, an art teacher at Bunche Park Elementary School. “Kids, they’re very much into hands on activities and that’s what is great about this museum.”

Applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, February 2nd and can be done so by clicking on this link.
