Germany Elects Former Pastor, Pro-Democracy Activist as President

Joachim Gauck, a human rights activist and former pastor, was elected by German lawmakers as President of Germany Sunday, assuming the post vacated by Christian Wulff, Reuters reported. Gauck won 991 votes, while his main opponent, Beate Klarsfeld, won 126. Wulff resigned from the presidential post last month amid a scandal over financial favors. According to an opinion poll published by Infratest Saturday, eighty percent of Germans trust Gauck, yet two-thirds felt he would be an "uncomfortable" president for the nation's political parties.
