Guatemala's First Lady Divorces to Campaign

For this couple, some things are more important than marriage: Guatemalan President Alvaro and his wife filed for divorce "by mutual consent" earlier this month so the first lady could run for president. In Guatemala, it is illegal for a president's family member to succeed him in office, but a divorce would allow Mrs. Sandra Torres de Colom to do that. Constitutional lawyer Carlos Molina Mencos told the Guatemalan Times that although the move was technically allowed, it was "immoral."
