South Florida honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with parades and celebrations Monday.
In Fort Lauderdale, the parade began at 10:30 a.m. at Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard and Sistrunk Boulevard.
People wore Martin Luther King, Jr.'s name and face on their clothes. One of those people, Tekeisha Turpin, says this day symbolizes unity.
"Everybody comes together no matter what your color, your creed, where you are from - none of that matters. It's just one. We all come from one person. One person and that's it," Turpin said.

High school bands marched down the street., and even the smallest marchers held signs with a very important message that read, "Mentoring. It's everyone's job."
"They are our future. They are the next generation, so we need them to know about all this that's happened," said Turpin. "They need to know about the history of this country, of black people and white people and what happened."
That's why Turpin comes to the parade every years with her young nieces and nephews. For Ferreta Kelly, it's the same. She was there with her grandchildren.
"I teach them it's always good to know what happened in the past because technically, a lot of the things that happened in the past - we are not aware of the past - we will never know what's happening in the future," Kelly said.
Miami's MLK parade was at 11 a.m. and traveled along Northwest 54th Street from 12th Avenue to 19th Avenue. Street closures will begin at 9 a.m. and will reopen around 5 p.m.
Hallandale Beach also held an MLK Day parade and festival beginning at 10 a.m. The parade began in the 900 block of Northwest 2nd Avenue, proceeds south to West Hallandale Beach Boulevard, then west to Northwest 8th Avenue (Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard), then north to O.B. Johnson Park. The festival runs from noon to 6 p.m. in the park.
The City of Miramar held its first MLK Day celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lakeshore Park. The event features a mini parade from Forzano Park to Lakeshore Park, where there was music, dancing and entertainment.
