At Leon Medical Centers, it is our mission to provide interesting and insightful activities to our patients and the overall Medicare community of Miami Dade County. We are always in search of activities that can make a difference in the lives of our senior population and improve their overall quality of life.

In addition to activities like computer and pilates classes (both offered at Leon Medical Centers), research has shown that seniors enjoy gardening; especially Hispanic seniors who significantly over-index the general population. It was this information that helped us develop our most successful seminar series to date: The Plant Clinic with Bertila Ramos.

Bertila Ramos, a Master Gardner who graduated from University of Florida with her Master’s Degree in Botanical Sciences and a local radio personality, has been delivering biweekly seminars at Leon Medical Centers and the response has been overwhelming. The Leon Medical Centers patients, and the community in general, are invited to her seminars as she tackles gardening challenges facing South Florida foliage. Her seminars teach the proper way to raise orchids, grow potted plants and tropical fruits, and eliminate pests that damage gardens. Guests are invited to bring samples of diseased house and yard plants as she provides diagnosis and methods to cure their maladies.

It has been proven that the senior population feels more useful and accomplished when they care for living things, be it their spouses, children, grandchildren and yes, even plants!
