Accused Child Sex Offender Nabbed in Peru

A wanted sex offender is back in South Florida Thursday night to face multiple charges after being on the run for the last six years.

U.S. Marshals said Alexander Chirinos, 31, was arrested in the Peruvian capital of Lima last December. Marshals flew to Lima over the weekend to take custody of Chirinos and brought him back to the United States Thursday.

Chirinos is accused of sexually assaulting a seven-year-old in 2007. An arrest warrant was issued in January 2008 and charged Chirinos with one count of lewd and lascivious conduct on a child under 16, two counts of lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under 12, and five counts of sexual battery on a victim under the age of 12.

“We believe he knew the arrest warrant was outstanding and that's why he fled the United States and was hiding out in Peru,” senior inspector Barry Golden said.

The Marshals Service said it was “difficult” to locate Chirinos at first because he concealed his flight form the United States. An Interpol Red Notice was issued for Chirinos in March 2012 and in June of that year, Marshals in Miami developed information that Chirinos was believed to be in Peru.

“They developed some information on places he was frequenting in the Lima, Peru area,” Golden said. “We developed information on websites he was using and logging on to some internet cafes in the Lima, Peru area to conceal his location from law enforcement.”

Investigators were able to locate Chirinos because he was using a portion of his name to run websites. Deputies determined that Chirinos was logging into the sites from internet cafes, which is where he was arrested by Peruvian authorities late last year.
