Backyard Collapse Will Take Weeks To Fix

Workers begin to fix Sunrise yard that collapsed into canal

Workers are using boulders to help reinforce the banks of a canal behind a sinking condominium complex in Sunrise.

Six backyards and fences collapsed into the South Florida canal Dec. 16, forcing residents to find other living accommodations. Work to rebuild their backyards began this week after Sunrise commissioners agreed to pay $225,000 to fix the canal.

Officials say the work should take about three weeks. The boulders are being dumped into the canal, which is about 20 feet deep.

Engineers have done extensive testing at the site, but officials say they may never know what caused the collapse.

The canal runs behind the Spring Tree Cove West complex in this Fort Lauderdale suburb.
