A brazen Hollywood jewelry store thief's smash and grab plan worked -- until it was time to get away.
Police say the suspect targeted the Minebender Jewelry Store at the Hollywood Mall on Park Rd. near Hollywood Blvd. Wednesday morning, firing a gun into the store's front windows to break the glass and get at some of the items on display.
The store was not open at the time, but witnesses saw the man grab jewelry and watches and take off into a nearby neighborhood.
Police say the armed suspect ran into a house and tried to get away through the backyard, but an undercover officer who happened to be in the area was able to catch him.
The witnesses were able to identify the man, whose name was not released by police. Police said the man will be charged with grand theft.
