Broward Students Attempt to Set Guinness Book Record for Largest Group Handshake

The event will raise money for the school's Exceptional Student Education program.

J.P. Taravella High School students were hoping to get into in the Guinness Book of World Records Friday for the longest group handshake.

More than 1,500 students, teachers and staff will participate in the handshake as part of the school's "Let's Shake On It!" campaign that promotes and encourages respect and acceptance of differences between their peers, according to Broward County Public Schools.

The Distributive Education Clubs of America marketing group at the school was alerted to the idea after they heard about the longest lasting handshake. They became curious about it and decided to give it a try to raise money for their school's Exceptional Student Education program, the school district said.

The event will take place on the school's football field. The district says the continuously moving handshake is expected to take 25 minutes.
