A Southwest Miami-Dade child is being hailed as a hero after saving his entire family from a massive fire that broke out inside their home overnight.

Crews arrived at the home near SW 123rd Avenue just south of 240th Street just before midnight, where flames engulfed and destroyed the mobile home before eventually being put out.

The situation could have been deadly if not for the quick action of 8-year-old Noel Cortes, who woke up having trouble breathing and found the home filled with smoke. Cortes went outside to get air before reentering the home to get his parents and two siblings.

“I was like ‘Dad, Dad, wake up’ and when he woke up he saw smoke everywhere,” Cortes said. “My mom ran outside with my little sister because she was sleeping. It was scary.”

The American Red Cross is assisting the family at this time as an investigation continues into what caused the fire to begin.
