Crewmember Killed in Incident On Board Carnival Ecstasy

A Carnival Cruise Line worker was killed in an incident involving an elevator last Sunday.

Miami-Dade Police have identified the victim as 66-year-old Jose Sandoval Opazo, an electrician employed by CCL.

In a statement, the cruise line confirmed that Opazo was killed while on board the Carnival Ecstasy, and extends its sympathies to his family and loved ones.

"Our CareTeam is providing support. Appropriate authorities have been notified and a full investigation into the cause of the accident is underway," Carnival Cruise Line says in the statement.

Opazo was somehow crushed by an elevator while on board the ship, police say. The exact details of the incident remain under investigation.

The ship was on the final leg of a three-day cruise from Miami, CCL says.
