Florida Sees Crime Rate Drop in First Half of 2014

Crime dropped in Florida by 2.4 percent in the first half of 2014 compared to the same period last year, according to a report released Friday.

"Florida is on a path to a 44-year crime low, which is great news for Florida families, communities and visitors," Gov. Rick Scott said in a news release.

While crime was down overall, the 2014 Semi-Annual Uniform Crime Report said there was a 0.1 percent increase in violent crimes, such as murder, sex offenses and aggravated assault. Domestic violence went up nearly a half-percent.

"We are deeply concerned about the 19.4 percent increase in domestic violence murders," Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence president and CEO Tiffany Carr said in the release. "We are committed to work with our law enforcement partners to address this significant increase."

Law enforcement officers made 444,558 arrests from January through June 2014. Three law enforcement officers died from criminal causes while on duty and one died accidently.
