Dolphins Trade Jordan Lucas to Chiefs for Draft Pick

The Dolphins received a draft pick from the Chiefs in exchange for Jordan Lucas on Friday

The Miami Dolphins traded safety Jordan Lucas to the Kansas City Chiefs for a future draft pick.

The teams did not disclose the details of the pick, but it is reportedly a seventh-round selection. Lucas was considered to be on the bubble for a roster spot and the Dolphins may have otherwise lost him for nothing.

In Thursday's preseason finale, Lucas had a big night against the Falcons. It is likely that this trade was finalized partially because of that performance. Lucas picked up an interception, a sack and three tackles in Miami's win. The Chiefs have dealt with a number of injuries to their secondary and Lucas could end up being an important asset.

Miami drafted Lucas in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL draft out of Penn State. Lucas ended up picking up eight tackles for Miami across 19 games. Prior to last season, the Dolphins waived Lucas and he ended up on the team's practice squad. Lucas would join Miami's roster in October and remained there the rest of the way.

Lucas' exit will likely open the door for Maurice Smith to make Miami's roster. Smith has also been seen as a player who could end up being cut prior to the opener. With limited roster spots available, the choice was likely going to come down to Lucas or Smith.

The Dolphins will need to submit their 53-man roster prior to Saturday's deadline at 4:00 p.m.
