A businessman who is also a former mayor of Islamorada in the Florida Keys has been sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison for tax fraud.
A federal judge imposed the sentence Monday on 47-year-old Michael Alan Reckwerdt, who previously pleaded guilty to conspiring to defraud the Internal Revenue Service. Prosecutors say Reckwerdt paid employees at some of his businesses in cash as a way to underpay employment taxes.
Reckwerdt was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine and more than $160,000 in restitution.
Reckwerdt's businesses include Robbie's Marine Enterprises, which includes a popular marina where patrons can hand-feed tarpon, Rent-A-Boat Inc. and Flamingo Air of the Florida Keys.
