FIU Gets a New Prez

Mark B. Rosenberg named the new president of Florida International University

There’s a new president in town at Florida International University, Mark B. Rosenberg.

Selected on Saturday, Rosenberg, who succeeds Modesto A. Maidique after nearly 23 years in the position, says “being named president of FIU is the honor of a lifetime."

It’s a school he is long familiar with. Rosenberg, 59, joined the team at FIU back in 1976 as a political science professor. In 1999 he served as acting president of the school.

After nearly 30 years at FIU, Rosenberg moved on in 2005 to be chancellor of the State University System. Then, earlier this year, he left to start a sabbatical as visiting research professor at Vanderbilt University. Rosenberg says he had intentions of returning to FIU this summer as a staff member. But he came back sooner in a higher position.

As president, Rosenberg says his goal is funding for the school. "I will work day and night to tell the story of this university and raise the funds necessary to accelerate our momentum as a leading research university. We are in the budget fight of our lives," he said.

"I have committed nearly all of my professional career to FIU. I love this institution and there's no place where I would rather be," he told the Board of Trustees Search Committee. "We will work to make sure FIU is a leading student-centered urban public research university that is locally and globally engaged. We will energize our alumni network. Our graduates have a hungry heart for FIU."
