Father of Boy Who Died in Fire Arrested for Child Neglect

Police have arrested the father of a young boy who was killed in a Lauderhill apartment fire last week.

Wisler Isme, 29, has been charged with child neglect with great bodily harm in the death of 8-year-old son Jayden Isme.

The fire happened last Monday on the second floor of an apartment building at 2031 Northwest 59th Way. Two brothers, Jayden Isme and 9-year-old Justin Isme were upstairs. Justin Isme was able to jump to safety, but Jayden Isme became trapped, and his body was later found by firefighters.

Police said Wisler Isme left the boys home alone while their mother Melanie Harvey was at work. Justin Isme told officers that his mother usually leaves a candle burning inside his and his brother's bedroom, as well as in the kitchen and in her own bathroom, according to the arrest affidavit.

Justin Isme also told police he last saw his father inside the home at the top of the stairs just before he and his brother went to sleep inside their mother's bedroom, but he did not know where his father was at the time of the fire.

Fire rescue responded to the scene after Justin Isme jumped to safety and alerted a neighbor who called 911. Witness statements in the arrest report describe Justin Isme waking up neighbors and screaming out his brother's name as they attempted to get help.

Wisler Isme is being held on $50,000 bond at the Broward Main Jail. It is unclear if he has an attorney.
