Former Cane's Coaching Career Starts Small

UM star and 49ers Cornerback Mike Rumph coaching kids in Miramar

He was a national champion at the University of Miami and a first-round draft pick in the NFL, so what was the next logical step for Mike Rumph?

How about coaching 90-pound kids in Miramar.

Rumph, the former Hurricanes and 49ers cornerback had his career cut short by an injury in 2008, so at 30 years old, he's starting a coaching career.

And like anyone else, he's starting from the bottom up.

"I don't have an ego, I'm here for the kids, I'm here for the team," Rumph said. "So whatever I've gotta do to help the team, that's what I'm gonna do, if they tell me to dump the trash, that's what I'm gonna do."

Rumph's son Jalen is on the team, but he might be the only one who knew about the Miramar Panthers coach's celebrated past.

"I could say I'm in the NFL all my life, but until they see pictures and film, it don't hit 'em," Rumph said. "A lot of them, they go home and say 'I saw you on the internet last night and you're really good,' and I'm like, 'I've been trying to tell y'all that.'"

Rumph doesn't really make a big deal about his career, so even the kids' parents didn't put two and two together at first.

It's a long way from the Orange Bowl or NFL at Regional Park in Miramar, but Rumph still brings that big time intensity when he's dealing with the little fellas.

"You're not just gonna be handed anything, so I show then that you gotta compete, you gotta be on time, you gotta respect your teammates," Rumph said.

Rumph is a volunteer coach and also works as a high school assistant, and says his ultimate goal is to coach college football.

But for now, he's just worried about the Miramar Panthers making it to the Super Bowl.
