Gal Pawned Family Jewels: Police

Homestead woman ripped off relatives, sold valuables

A Homestead woman was charged yesterday with stealing and pawning jewelry from a relative's house in Key Largo.

Maria Rivera, 32, was arrested after police discovered that she had pawned several items of jewelry at pawnshops in Miami and the Florida Keys -- all belonging to her family.

Rivera was allegedly stealing jewelry from her uncle's home. Her uncle's wife reported to police in December that jewelry had gone missing over the last several months, and she suspected that it had been Rivera, who usually watched their house when they were gone.

Rivera turned herself in after a warrant was issued for her arrest. She was charged with grand theft, dealing in stolen property and fraud and she was booked into jail.
