Judge Seals Barahona Statements

A judge has sealed the statements of a Miami couple charged with beating their adoptive daughter to death

A judge has sealed the statements of a Miami couple charged with beating their adoptive daughter to death.

Judge Sarah Zabel said attempts to redact parts of the statements would make them unintelligible and ruled to keep them from becoming public record Thursday.

She is still considering whether to release other "voluminous" evidence in the case.

Attorneys for Jorge and Carmen Barahona asked to seal all evidence, saying the publicity could taint a jury pool and prevent them from receiving a fair trial.

The Barahonas are charged with first-degree murder after Nubia's body was found partially decomposed in the back of Jorge's truck.

Her brother survived, but was badly burned after he was doused with a toxic chemical.

The Barahonas have pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
