Local Officers Honor Fallen Sergeant's Wishes, Attend 1st Day of School for Son

What to Know

  • Nealy’s father, Bill, was a sergeant with the West Palm Beach Police Department until he passed away in September 2018.

Officers honored the wishes of a fallen South Florida sergeant to be by his son’s side during the first day of school.

Members of the West Palm Beach Police Department were at the Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday for the first day of classes for Colin Nealy.

Nealy’s father, Bill, was a sergeant with the West Palm Beach Police Department until he passed away in September 2018 following a battle with skin cancer. Before his death, Nealy asked his fellow officers to make sure they were by Colin’s side for the first day of classes the next year.

“Today is obviously a big day for Colin, but we’re also doing it to remember Bill,” said Ofc. Brent Treu, who worked with Nealy. “I know he’s smiling down from heaven on us today.”

Colin’s mother, Laurie Miller, says she is happy that her children will be able to attend classes closer to their home after moving to Fort Lauderdale after Nealy’s death.
