Man Accused of Beating Pregnant Girlfriend, Causing Lockdown While Armed at Miami-Dade College's Homestead Campus

Frederick Nino, 23, was arrested on charges including aggravated battery of a pregnant victim and possession of a firearm on school property

A man who caused a lockdown and evacuation at Miami-Dade College's Homestead campus after allegedly beating his pregnant girlfriend while armed with a handgun in a campus parking lot has been arrested, police said.

Frederick Nino, 23, was arrested on charges including aggravated battery of a pregnant victim and possession of a firearm on school property hours after Tuesday's incident that set off a major police response at the college, according to an arrest report.

The report said a witness saw a man, later identified as Nino, kicking a woman in the parking lot. The witness called police and when officers arrived the victim told them Nino, her boyfriend, struck her after they got into an argument over a phone call she received from a male friend, the report said.

The victim told officers Nino punched her in the stomach and kicked her while she was on the ground, even though he knew she was four months pregnant with his child, the report said. The woman, who said she had stomach pains, was taken to a nearby hospital.

At one point while he was kicking his girlfriend, Nino dropped a silver revolver from the waistband of his pants, picked it up and started walking toward the college, the report said.

Several officers and a SWAT team responded to the school, which was placed on lockdown and evacuated while they checked the entire campus, the report said. Footage showed armed officers throughout the campus as students and staff were led out of buildings with their hands raised.

The report said Nino was arrested hours later at a house in Homestead. He was booked into jail where he remained held on $15,000 bond Wednesday. Attorney information wasn't available.
