Man Charged in Pink Chihuahua Theft Still Behind Bars

Bond reduced for accused South Florida pooch thief

The man accused of dognapping a pink chihuahua from a South Florida party last year is still behind bars and is unable to pay his bond, it was revealed during a hearing Monday.

Channing Reynolds, 34, remains in a Broward lockup after his bond was reduced from $5,000 to $2,500 during the morning hearing.

Reynolds is charged with the heist of Hudson Hayward Hemingway, a 10-month-old pup with a pink belly, pink ears and pink earrings, who disappeared during a party at Wilton Manors gay bar Georgie's Alibi in July 2009.

Hudson's owner, Brian Dortort, says Reynolds, who he claimed had a Britney Spears tattoo, asked to hold the pup then took off with him when nobody was looking.

A warrant had been issued for Reynolds last September, but authorities weren't able to locate him until was arrested in January on DUI-related charges in Pennsylvania.

He was finally extradited to Broward in August to face charges of grand theft.

The pooch hasn't been found, and Reynolds denies taking it. A second chihuahua was donated to Dortort last September, which he named Hudson Hayward Hemingway II and promptly gave earrings and some pink accents.

Dortort, who attended Monday's hearing, said the loss of his first dog is still a serious matter, and he hopes to find out what happened to it soon.

"It's grand theft," said Dortort. "It's a living, breathing, eating thing."
