Miami-Dade Police Shoot Man During Traffic Stop

A Miami-Dade police detective shot a 44-year-old man who drove toward officers during an attempted traffic stop.

It happened Monday evening around 7:20 p.m. near Northwest 90th Street and Northwest 26th Avenue.

Francisco Perez was in serious but stable condition when he was taken to a Miami hospital after the Monday night shooting.

Spokeswoman Jennifer Capote said in news release that officers approached the green Toyota Camry during the traffic stop but Perez refused to stop and his vehicle continued moving toward them.

The detective who fired the gun was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Capote says the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating. She didn't say why the vehicle was stopped.

The news release says Perez is white. Both detectives involved in the traffic stop are black. Their names haven't been released.

Police confirmed the officer who shot Perez works in plainclothes and drives an unmarked vehicle. They said he identified himself as a police officer and showed his badge during the traffic stop.

According to Police Benevolent Association President John Rivera, things were bad before the officers Perez pulled over and once he finally stopped, they got ugly, "A police officer's work is never routine. They came up on a suspicious vehicle and things turned bad very quickly in less than a second."

No further details were immediately available.
