Miami Police, Community Leader Promote Gun Buyback Program

"Too many shootings have been happening throughout our county."

That’s the message from Rev. Jerome Starling, who is working with Miami Police in a call for peace this holiday season.

"You got to put the guns down and you got to be able to turn the guns in,” Staling said in a Thursday press conference.

Bolstering that call is the August death of eight year old Jada Page, who was playing outside her grandmother's front porch when a stray bullet killed her.

Now, officers hope the offer of gift cards for guns will have more people buying holiday gifts instead of spraying bullets.

"Every weapon that is turned in will be one less gun on the street that can be used to shoot or injure an innocent victim," said Miami Police Asst. Chief Ronald Papier. "If you're sick and tired of your cousins, your homeboys being gunned down, turn the guns in."

The buyback will take plays this Saturday at Dorsey Park, located off NW 1st Avenue and 17th Street, from 10 AM until 2 PM.
