Stroller Strides Set Mommies in Motion

One program is helping women get their pre-baby bod back

"Patty cake, patty cake, “ the moms chant while they break out into a sweat.

Every weekday morning at 9 a.m., before Sawgrass Mills opens its stores, you'll see Stroller Strides -- a fitness program for new mothers -- in action.

“Everybody wants their body back after baby. So we really focus on interval training, strength training, cardio training,” said owner Cynthia Velez.

Moms don’t have to worry about finding a sitter or missing the baby.

“I have a gym membership as well. I never go anymore. I have no one to watch him and no time,“ explained new mom Becky Jones. “So in the morning this is perfect . It's our little outing together and we love it.”

The benefits are more than physical.

“Statistics show that exercise," Velez said, "especially after the baby is born, reduces the chance of post partum depression or post partum blues, which a lot of new moms get.”

Stroller strider Courtney Newman said there are plenty of social benefits, too.

“The kids gets to socialize as well as the parents, we've gone ahead and had play groups and book clubs, it's gotten deeper than just exercising together.”

The cost of Stroller Strides is $55 a month. Classes are also taking place at Pembroke Lakes Mall. When holiday shopping begins and the weather cools down, they’ll move to an outdoor park, and an evening class for working mothers will start in October.
