Oldies But Goodies on the Block at Collector Cars Auction of Fort Lauderdale

Some of the classics could sell for upwards of $200,000

More than 500 classic cars are going on the auction block this weekend at the Broward Convention Center for this year's Collector Cars Auction of Fort Lauderdale.

Among the stars of the auction is a rare, beige and brown, soft top 1933 Chrysler CL Phaeton convertible expected to fetch as much as $400,000.

"This is the top of Chrysler's production," said Auctions America President Donnie Gould, the auction house that organized the event. "It's one of only 36 cars ever built, and one of 13 that remain."

Gould also expects that a 1970 red and black Chevy Chevelle could perform well at auction. With its black convertible soft top and Turbo-HydraMatic 400 automatic transmission, it could rake in bids upwards of $200,000.

Some cars featured at the auction are instant classics, like the silver Mercedes Benz AMG SLS coupe with side-opening gull wing doors.

Though it's just one year old, its near-200 mph top speed and top-of-the-line styling has already made it legendary.

Gould said many customers don't consider these big-dollar cars luxuries.

"Some people are looking for a good, solid investment that they can put their money into, and have a return on their investment sometime in the future," Gould explained.

The auction kicks off Friday and runs through Sunday.

Bids can be made in person, online and via phone.
