Churchgoers Stabbed Protecting Pastor From Attack

Homeless man arrested and charged with attempted murder

A homeless man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after he allegedly attacked a pastor after a church service Monday.

Douglas Betancourt, 25, is also accused of stabbing three other people who tried to protect the preacher, a Miami Police arrest report stated.

It's unclear what set off the attack, which happened at Iglesia Evangelica Monte De Sion, a church on West Flagler Street, around 11:30 p.m.

Witnesses told police Betancourt approached Pastor Hector Silva as the man was leaving the rear of the church.

Betancourt then allegedly pulled out a knife and said, "I don't like being humiliated. Don't run away. Let's handle this as men," the report stated.

Three other churchgoers tried to jump in front of Betancourt as he lunged at Silva.

One man was cut on the chest, another man received a laceration to the head, and a third man was stabbed in the right leg and had to be rushed to the hospital, police said.

On Tuesday, a Miami-Dade judge ordered Betancourt held without bail. It was unclear if he had an attorney.
