Terrified Dentist Wins Keys Bridge Race

Jason Bodnar is good with cavities, but scared of bridges. He still earned a crown.

The most amazing physical achievements seem to be borne of fear, like the time we broke the world record in the standing broad jump at the sight of a particularly hairy spider.

(No one was there to take an official measurement, so you'll just have to take our word for it.)

As such, it's no wonder North Carolina dentist Jason Bodnar finished the Keys' annual Seven Mile Bridge Run faster than everyone else on Saturday: it takes place entirely on a picturesque span between Key Vaca and Little Duck Key, and Bodnar is terrified of crossing bridges over water.

"I do have the phobia of bridges still,” said Bodnar, who beat 1,499 other runners with a time of 37:43. “When I’m running I stay towards the middle and don’t look side-to-side.”

The race, which began in 1982, shuts down the Overseas Highway for two hours. Only 1,500 applicants are selected each year for safety reasons, and despite his fear, it is one appointment Bodnar always keeps.

This weekend's top time was his fifth Bridge Race win since he first competed in 2005.
