When students return to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland next school year, the position of principal will now be a two person job.
Ty Thompson, who gained national attention following the deadly shooting that killed 17 people inside the school on February 14th, will be joined by Teresa Hall as of July 1st, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
Hall currently serves as the principal of West Broward High School.
Lisa Maxwell, who heads the Broward Principals and Assistants Association, told the paper that demand for media coverage, parent involvement and student needs as well as day-to-day activities of running the school created the need for a second person.
"I don't really see any negatives about bringing on someone else to help steer the ship," said Stephen Feuerman, a parent. "We're very happy with the captain Ty Thompson.
Thompson was not on campus the day of the shooting but became known for his words of support in the wake of the tragedy.
"He has 100% become a huge community leader and we need a guy like him here and we need to be stable. Stability is one of the things that will lead us to healing," said Feuerman.
"Any additional support is always welcome. I think they want to make sure all the support is at the school that is necessary," said Mayor Christine Hunschofsky of Parkland.
