A teen is recovering in the hospital after he was stabbed by another student at Miami Killian Senior High School in southwest Miami-Dade Tuesday.
The Miami-Dade School Board and police confirm that 15-year-old Deandre Johnson, an honor student and prominent member of the football team, was stabbed by a 17-year-old female senior at the school just before 11 a.m. Tuesday at the school, located at 10655 Southwest 97th Avenue in southwest Miami-Dade.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue teams transported Johnson to Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital. He was listed in stable condition Tuesday night, per the school board.
Wednesday morning, Johnson's family were with him at the hospital. They tell NBC 6 South Florida that the teen is improving and that he's able to nod his head.
The stabbing happened in the lunchroom in front of several other students aroung lunchtime, witnesses said.
"I saw him, like just, she went to stab him a second time too, it wasn't just once, she went for the second time and he just dodged it," student Nicole Palacino said.
"He went outside and he dropped down to the floor, his eyes started rolling back, it was just so bad, everyone thought he was gonna die right there," Victoria Martinez said.
Chopper 6 aerial images showed the school on lockdown with no one being allowed in or out of the school. Parents were seen gathered in front of the school. The lockdown was lifted a short time later.
Miami-Dade School Superintendent Alberto Carvalho tweeted about the incident Tuesday afternoon.

Family members said the victim's name is Deandre Johnson, and that he is a 15-year-old sophomore and a member of the school's football team.
"Right now his dream's on hold, I'm more concerned about his future, and about him making a 100 percent full recovery," father Andre Johnson said.
Cell phone video showed the female student screaming as she was taken into custody at the scene. A knife was recovered at the school.
She was questioned at Robert Morgan Educational Center for a few hours. The young woman was later seen in handcuffs and being placed into a police car.
Sources said the teen will be charged with attempted felony murder and two counts of carrying a weapon on school grounds. She's expected to be in juvenile court by Wednesday, sources said.
"My daughter goes to school here so I'm confident with the safety at the school right now," Miami-Dade Schools Police Lt. Raul Correa said.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
