High Bacteria Levels Prompt Advisory at 2 South Florida Beaches

The Florida Department of Health has issued a swimming advisory at two South Florida beaches due to high levels of bacteria in the water.

The advisory, issued Friday, urges people to not swim at Crandon South Beach in Key Biscayne and Haulover Beach South after water samples from these areas exceeded the federal and state recommended standard for enterococci.

The advisory has been issued until further notice.

Enterococci are normally found in the intestinal tract of humans and animals and can cause diseases, infections or illnesses for humans such as urinary tract infections and, though less frequently, meningitis and pneumonia.
