Detectives are investigating a head-on crash in Deerfield Beach that left a teen girl and her grandmother dead and three other people hospitalized over the weekend.

The crash happened around 6:25 p.m. Saturday in the 4300 block of West Hillsboro Boulevard and claimed the lives of 17-year-old Breanha Free-Baker and her grandmother, 61-year-old Robyn Underwood, Broward Sheriff's Office officials said.

Officials said Free-Baker was behind the wheel of a Nissan Altima when a Dodge Avenger lost control, crossed the raised center median and drove head-on into traffic, hitting the Altima and two other vehicles.

Free-Baker, of Coral Springs, and Underwood, of Plantation, were pronounced dead at the scene. A third person in the car, 40-year-old Michele Free-Baker, was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Avenger, 21-year-old Andrea Schneider, and another driver, 22-year-old Melanie Perozin, were also hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. Another driver suffered minor injuries and wasn't hospitalized.

Homicide detectives suspect the Avenger was traveling at a high rate of speed. The crash remains under investigation.
