Cops Investigate UM Hospital Firebomb Blaze

Molotov cocktail ignites fire in medical center's corridor

Police are looking for someone who may have used a Molotov cocktail to start a fire inside the University of Miami Hospital.

The hand made incendiary device was used to wreak havoc at the hospital last week, setting an area on the second-floor corridor near the administrative offices ablaze on the evening on July 30.

According to the hospital, no patients or staff were harmed during the incident as the automatic sprinkler system swiftly extinguished the flames. Staff evacuated patients briefly while the situation was contained and the water was cleaned.

“Hospital staff performed flawlessly during this event, placing the safety and health of their patients first,” University of Miami Health System officials said in a statement.

The source and intent behind the deadly firebomb are unknown. “Campus security officials are taking extra precautions in the wake of the fire,” officials said.

The University of Miami Police are looking for leads and information regarding the incident and the woman pictured who may have pertinent information.

Anyone with information is asked to call the UM Police at 305-284-6666 or Miami-Dade CrimeStoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
