The U.S. Postal Service has added a new tool for consumers in the battle against so-called porch pirates.
Some holiday thieves are trailing delivery trucks to strike. Soon after a delivery person leaves a package on a porch, the package thieves swoop in to take the merchandise.
"We’re looking at the most recent trend, unfortunately, porch pirating – porch pirating – call it what you will," U.S. Postal Inspector Ivan Ramirez said.
The USPS police division is concerned that not only are USPS delivery drivers being trailed by porch pirates, but also delivery people working for UPS and FedEx.
The USPS Informed Delivery service allows users to redirect a package while it is still in transit. Consumers can divert the package from its original destination to a location where there may be someone they trust.
"We always recommend, if your employers allow it, have packages shipped to your employment because places of employment, you are going to have someone sign for it – secure it," Ramirez said.
