‘Uber Up' Comes to South Florida for Recruitment

Uber may be out of Broward County, but they are doubling up in Miami-Dade.

Monday afternoon, the company launched a major push to recruit 10,000 drivers in Miami's urban neighborhoods.

"Liberty City, Little Havana. So we're looking forward to getting in the communities," said Bill Gibbons with Uber.

Miami Gardens, where the recruitment event took place, is also an area Uber is looking to tackle.

"We've seen a lot of demand increase in areas which historically don't have a lot of access to transportation options," Gibbons said.

"It's very hard when you live in black neighborhoods when you don't have a car. You have to catch a bus and wait on a bus. So it's hard," said Jermaine Ealey, who wants to join Uber. "Now with Uber you have a chance someone can pick you up and it's cheap also."

Dolphins player AJ Francis, who is also an Uber driver, spoke at the info session. The defensive lineman is under contract for over $500,000, but said he wanted some extra spending money.

"I was very inspired by him, you know, having someone who is a football player and he is also working for Uber. So that gives it a big ups," Ealey said.

Uber representatives said safety is a top priority during these workshops. According to the company, applicants must first submit a list of documents and then pass a third-party background check.
