Armed Home Invasion in Southwest Miami-Dade

Police are investigating a reported armed home invasion at a family's house in southwest Miami-Dade early Tuesday.

The incident happened shortly after 2 a.m. at the house in the 11200 block of Southwest 173rd Terrace, Miami-Dade Police spokesman Det. Alvaro Zabaleta said.

According to Zabaleta, 20-year-old Eduardo Martinez was in a shed outside the home when he encountered four armed men who demanded money and drugs.

The men pistol-whipped Martinez then confronted Martinez's stepfather, Luis Santos, who had gone out to the shed after hearing loud noises, Zabaleta said.

The suspects, who also had a machete, knife and pepper spray, shattered the sliding glass door at the back of the home and went inside, Zabaleta said.

A woman and child who were inside the home at the time, Martinez's mother and her 11-year-old son, hid from the suspects under an air conditioning unit and weren't harmed.

The suspects left the home without taking anything. Zabaleta said a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found in the home.

The incident is under investigation.
